Week 6

Monday

Today I went to the printer at 'Ink' to get my A5 Brochure printed. I used 160gsm paper. I also finalised all my bookwork.

Tuesday

Presentation day and final hand in. I also finalized my blog.

The main thing that I've learnt from this process is to take more creative risks and get going from the very start and don't fall behind.

Mapping

This is my final map and intro spread. The Map was hand done using sharpie and ink pen for the aquatic life and water colour and dry brush for the water the rest is basic shapes in photoshop. For the map I wanted to give it a very earthy feel with a crispness to communicate fishing.

This is my final Extra Spread which i have made a spread that states the local fishing restrictions and an actual life minimum paua measurement so this brochure can be used on the fish trip. Keeping the spreads cohesive I used the same shapes, colour pallet and materials.

In class for both lessons we carried on with refining our spreads and constructing our map and extra spread.

Week 4 Lesson 2

Critique Type Application

 Today in class we placed type into our spreads and critiqued in groups.

My group chose the second type as the lines have a nicer spacing making it easier to read

Again they chose the second type body as the text box is too narrow in the first one.

They chose the first one as it fits better with the composition of the curved line the fish make. It almost cradles the text body. 

Week 4 Lesson 1

Type 

Today we were re-introduced to type which I can now think about in my compositions. The Brief states that the body-copy must be set in Univers or Adobe Garamond. The headings can be set in the font of your choice. This was a healthy reminder since I did Type in the first semesters.

Petone Wharf 

Originally built in 1883 to load and unload ships, Petone Wharf is now a popular fishing spot for lacals and people from all over the Wellington region. Breathe in the fresh sea air as you overlook the huge landscape of Wellington City and listen to the gentle waves breaking against the wooden posts. 

This is the perfect destination to bring your children fishing for their first time with easy access and a safe flat walk out to sea. Equip with gutting stations and benches, the Wharf has everything needed to catch and prepare a beautiful red cod for the dinner table.

Makara Beach

Take a day off and go diving for Paua and Crayfish in the tranquill beach hidden in the hills. Enjoy a long drive through Ohariu country roads and discover a small community built around the beach. If the water is too rough take a walk along Makara Beach track or enjoy a coffee at the Beach Cafe. 

Hidden within the large fortifying cliff faces, creates a sense of privacy for each fisher. Beneath the ocean surface lays a large family of Paua, comouflaged on Makara’s rocks. Appropriate gear is recommended to dive in these parts, including; snorkel and mask, protective footwear, wetsuit (optional), Paua sack, and knife/trowel.  

Pukerua Bay

Wake up on an early morning and kayak out to experience all the serenity that Pukerua Bay has to offer. Where the weather is mostly fine, this bay is a flat milkpond that stretches for hundreds of metres. As you paddle out, feel the crisp salty air gently hit your face and listen to the water lightly tapping your boat. 

This bay is often visited by the locals and is a great place to bring the family or enjoy your own company. It doesn’t matter if you are passing through from the North or South side, drop by and cast out a line and relax after 

a long week.

I started new with Makara Beach as I need to target an adult audience so my design for Makara has to be clean, detail and mature colour pallet.

Week 3 Lesson 2

Grids and Composition

During this lesson we had a lectorial about grids and composition. 

What is a grid? 

A grid identifies 

– margins

– line length 

– columns 

– gutters 

– modules 

– baseline grid

A grid provides a framework on which to organise the information on a page. A grid builds unity between elements and consistency between pages. At the same time allowing for a vast number of variations. It simplifies both the creative and decision making process and makes complicated information manageable.While the grid is regular you can still create a feeling of space and freedom within it. From this lesson I learned how important grids are and how by lining up the text to the imagery can better the aesthetics and guide the readers eye from the image to the text.

Week 3 Lesson 1

Lesson 1

In class today we had a lecture that focused on pattern and colour and a visual cue. Pattern and texture contribute detail and richness to a composition, can hint at tangible content and representation. They contributes abstract and emotive qualities. I could use this in my compositions to help draw the readers eye where i want it to go.

These are developed photoshop compositions. In the Pukerua Bay compositions in particular I have used colour and texture to liven up and better communicate the warm, open Bay.

Pukerua

From the use of colour and patterns this composition communicates a warmer place compared to the previous composition that had high opacity shapes which gave Pukerua a washed out cloudy place which it's not.

Makara

Here I got rid of the fish and lines through it from the previous composition and let the colours speak for themselves. This is a more simple design.

Week 2 Lesson 2

Visual Language, style and aesthetics

In class today we analysed different stylistic approaches in examples. I saw one that i liked that used simple line drawing so I tried it myself.
