Chosen Sight

Fishing:

I have chosen fishing as my activity to promote. I wanted to promote something that was unique to Wellington as well as NZ Culture. Because Wellington is the Capital and is an ideal tourist destination this is an activity for locals as well as tourists. Although art is an iconic part of Wellington, I wanted a water based activity because the Wellington region is entirely surrounded by water and filled with bays and rivers and beaches ideal for water sports and fishing. From fishing and swimming, I thought that swimming is not strictly Wellington Culture and although fishing is a nation wide activity there are a vast range of fishing sights unique to Wellington Region worth exploring and Publicising. My Three sights Petone Wharf, Makara Bay, Pukerua Bay.

Week 1 Lesson 2

Process

Today in class we had a lectorial on Process. Discussing appropriate labelling and documenting of the design process. This was very helpful to my design process. By defining each stage helps determine exactly where I am in my process.
What is a Design Process?
A series of actions or steps taken to achieve a practical end.

We were shown students examples of Their design process and how the design process can determine the outcome of the final product. This helped me gain a better understanding of what my process should look like.

Choose Three Activities/Locations

Preparing for tomorrows class we had to choose three recreational activities/locations to research and come up with emotive qualities for each place using the template provided. I chose swimming as my first one because I used to do competitive swimming so it is something that I can get into as a designer. Also because of the diversity between pools, rivers and ocean. My second is fishing. I chose fishing because Wellington is surrounded by a vast range or bays, beaches and oceans uniques to the region and is a big part of Wellington culture. My third choice is Art in Wellington. I chose this because Wellington is known for it's creativity and I want to explore the variations from legal art to illegal art.

Brainstorm

Activities in the Greater Wellington Region

  • Swimming
  • Wellington on Wheels
  • Girls/Boys night out
  • Clothes shopping

  • Sports Venues
  • Water Activities
  • Art in Wellington
  • Tramping
  • Camping

Week 1 Session 1

Brief Overview

In class today we formed into our stream classes and introduced ourselves to our classmates that we will be spending the next 6 weeks with, brainstorming and bouncing ideas off of. Following that we unpacked the brief as a class and split into groups of 4 or 5 and brainstormed a range of possible sights, events and activities in the Wellington region that could be promoted. Then there was a shared lecture introducing 'Puna'.

Objective of Brief

Your task is to design a brochure that promotes a set of three thematically linked recreational destinations or activities in the Greater Wellington region. The solution must balance form with function by communicating the content in a way that is engaging and easy to comprehend. In addition you are required to document your design process by summarising each day’s activity through an on-line blog. Each post will outline what you did and how it advanced your project. It will also be tagged according to the stage or stages of the design process utilised.

Definitions of Puna

(Verb) To well up or flow.

Overview: Puna

This project responds to aspects of puna. It examines the way that ideas are generated and developed, the negotiation of authorship and ownership and the relationships between creative practitioners, clients and communities. Puna is the wellspring of ideas and knowledge. Ideas don’t just come from nowhere, but are sourced from all around us – from clients, from communities, from other designers and artists. In using and developing those ideas, we need to be aware of where they have come from, and design and make in a conscious way. Where do your ideas come from? How do you acknowledge this? What role do you play in shaping them further into creative work? What roles do others play?
