Week 3 Lesson 2

Grids and Composition

During this lesson we had a lectorial about grids and composition.
What is a grid?
A grid identifies
– margins
– line length
– columns
– gutters
– modules
– baseline grid
A grid provides a framework on which to organise the information on a page. A grid builds unity between elements and consistency between pages. At the same time allowing for a vast number of variations. It simplifies both the creative and decision making process and makes complicated information manageable. While the grid is regular you can still create a feeling of space and freedom within it. From this lesson I learned how important grids are and how by lining up the text to the imagery can better the aesthetics and guide the readers eye from the image to the text.
